Let us introduce ourselves….
Our team is a group of people that have worked within the Learning Disability sector for decades, we have always had a passion for the work we do and feel a great fulfilment having the opportunity to support and spend time with some amazing individuals.
We all met in our current job role which is working with clients with PMLD in a day centre environment. I think we can all agree that it is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding areas of Learning Disability; getting to know our client in a way that we are able to know their wants, needs and feelings even if they have a minimal way to communicate.
We recently found out that our centre is to be closed and our amazing clients will be looking for alternative services. As we investigated the other services available it became clear that there seemed to be a gap out there in the services on offer; for individuals with PMLD. Obviously, this did pull on our heartstrings as we only wanted the best service for our clients.
With our jobs also being dissolved it looked like we were heading for redundancy, and this is when we realised that we had the opportunity to do something amazing. With our experience, knowledge, compassion and commitment who better to open a day service to meet the needs of individuals with learning disability, specialising in PMLD.
Once we had made the decision that this was our future, it became a non-stop rollercoaster. We found a building which is already fitted with the main facilities needed and meets the disability discrimination Act 1995 regulations. It is centrally located with easy accessibility from all areas of Leicester. This will also open up more opportunities for our clients, removing certain barriers that may have restricted them before, being able to go out, explore and integrate more with the community.
With all our previous training we are all up to date with our health and safety, data protection, moving and handling, food hygiene, safeguarding and all other relevant training, we also have staff that are enteral feed trained. Now all we have to do is get the building ship shape and furnished with what is needed to create a fun, energetic, welcoming environment to provide the service these amazing individuals deserve.
